Road test: Viner Mitus 2008

Not the myth that you expect: light, comfortable and responsive enhanced long-distance and the most technical descent. Very good value for money, very few defects

The Company

The Tuscan Viner is a Company based in Pistoia, which celebrates this year the 61th anniversary of its foundation. In all these years has always marked for high-quality products. Few numbers, perhaps, but a lot of substance and attention to the customer. A company which is proud of its Made in Italy, not only in words but also and above all with the facts. All its production, in fact, is made in Italy, including carbon frames. A very attentive to the needs of enthusiasts: the whole production can be customized as required by the customer, from groups components from measures. Customized frames the selection of geometry or integrated seat, there are many choice so that will be very difficult to find two Viner exactly alike.

The range Mitus

Mitus’ frame has been designed with the clear intention to create a comfortable equipment over long distances, but addressed the use racing. This involves not only the need to create a product with outstanding qualities of absorption of disconnections soil and vibration, but also lightweight and responsive. A suitable frame for very long runs or very rugged paths, or for who wants serious comfort without sacrificing stiffness typical of a racing chassis. The effectiveness of this product has been repeatedly demonstrated by Miche team, which runs with frames Viner, where Pasquale Muto has been repeatedly brought in evidence. The range Mitus for 2008 provides different set up, all further customized. The group will have Campagnolo Centaur models, Chorus and Record; with the group Shimano Ultegra models and Dura Ace. Then we have the development Sram, with the Sram Force and Red; finally, the version Miche Replication who replied precisely the bicycle of team Miche and is equipped with group Miche Supertype / Record. In all cases is adopted in full the group, namely: command, derailleur, gear, crank (a traditional choice or compact), brakes, gear box, chain. The entire range is equipped with road bar, stem and seatpost Deda. The road bar is the model Challenge, stem and seatpost are Ultracarbon models. The saddle is a Selle Italia, and the pedals are Look Keo Classic. The bottle cage is of Elite, carbon. The wheels are Fulcrum, which can vary depending on their exhibition, from Racing 7 to Racing 3. The tyres are Schwalbe Stelvio the extent 700x23. The weights, as stated by the Home can vary from 7.2 to 8.5 kg. We reaffirm that this is the series stands, because then the customer can customize them as desired.

The frame

The frame, made entirely in Italy, is a carbon fess high 3K form. The pipeline, as well as the fork and rear, are Deda Steel, built on specific technicians Viner. The goal was to create a comfortable frame, but rigid and lightweight. Therefore, after careful study, has reached a form of square tubes of generous size, but without the exaggeration of other products. This particular form, as well as being aerodynamic, manages to combine low weight and hight rigidity to the ability to absorb vibration. The oblique and horizontal tube have a diameter greater in the joints of the box with bottom bracket and the seat tube. Minor, however, the increase in diameter in the area of craft steering. In this way it has tried to have a good stiffness in the area of the crank, for a minimum of energy dissipation during the pedal, and a certain flexibility in the area of craft steering for better absorb the disconnections’ asphalt. From this follows that the box of the bottom bracket is well sized, but without exaggeration, as the steering area. The seat tube is linear and has an internal diameter of 31.6 Mm. The fork is a Deda Black Fin, carbon monocoque high modulus. Like the chassis, presents an excellent bill, without smears. Presents a careful study of aerodynamic sheaths and is characterized by weight quite content (380 grams that stated by Deda) and the ability to mount up to 700x32 tyres. The latter should not be underestimated, enabling companies to adopt even more tyres suitable for long rides on roads disconnected or white. The rear is the Deda, Ice Tail model (senior sheaths) / Box (sheaths low), still in high modulus carbon 6K. Its' a very wagon yet very slight performance. It has large areas of reinforcement in both sheaths than in low and a high step wheel quite comfortable to be able to mount tyres wider than usual 700x23. The structure of this wagon, very compact and aerodynamic, goes perfectly with the fork and with the rest of the pipes. All the cart is well made with the beautiful drop in light that connected perfectly to carbon tubes. Large, then, the choice of measures (in addition to the already mentioned possibility to be built on the chassis measure): there are 13 measures in the standard geometry, 4 in geometry and compact geometry for many women. In addition, you can choose the integrated seat. Four colors available: natural carbon, heavenly, red, orange and pink. The frame alone weighs 1,130 grams, while the fork 380 grams. Of course, in addition to the assembled bike is also available frame kit comprising frame, fork and headset FSA. Below the table shapes and colors.

The bike we tried

The model arrived at our Editorial Board is assembled with the group Campagnolo Chorus and customized in various components. The construction quality of the bicycle is truly remarkable. The frame has a perfect paint protected by a large layer of varnish. Union is where the carbon has seen, the plot seems very same uniform, well connected areas bandaged. The colors and graphics are simple and elegant, and are weary current difficult even among many years. Several parties reaffirmed the notion that the bike is 100% Made in Italy, a factor which will please many. The cables are all well led and in areas of possible contact with the frame has been placed suitably protections. The passage of cables under the bottom bracket is well taken care to avoid any contact with the carbon fiber. The sheath low wagon back in the side chain is protected by an elegant coat, effective and practically invisible. The group Campagnolo Chorus is, as I said, taken to complete. They thus show commands with the levers carbon and ability to climb or increase more marches in a single blow. Even the command of the derailleur to move three positions in order to avoid friction in the chain on the derailleur cage crossings in more accentuated. The crank always belongs to the range Chorus Ultra-Torque, with the fine carbon cranks and crowns with 39 and 53 teeth (but you can also request the compact version with 34-50, 36-50 or 34-48 teeth). The gear box is always the Chorus, with ten reports and 11-12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25 scale. The change is the Chorus, balance short. The Skeleton brakes are differentiated with different arches for greater braking power on the front wheel and avoid capture back. The wheels are standard Fulcrum Racing 5, but our exemplary mount the excellent Racing 1. The Racing 5, however, are the best wheels suitable for daily use, light but reliable, the wheels just for a bicycle from "macinachilometri", possibly be matched with another pair of wheels for the races. The tyres are Schwalbe Stelvio 700x23 serial. Road bar, stem and seatpost of the series are Deda Elementi light alloy coated carbon, a solution that enables reliable and not excessively raising the final price. Our exemplary, however, has the fold Deda Glare, always with structure in light and carbon coating, the attack Deda Newton 31 in light and seatpost Deda Blackstick carbon monocoque. In this case we can say that it would have been good to have all components carbon monocoque, but this would have pushed the price too, and the aluminum coated carbon presents excellent reliability in the long term and is undoubtedly less sensitive to a monocoque structure. That is why the choice of Viner in serial configuring seems smart because reliable, relatively cheap and aesthetically appealing. The solution of our bike is an up-grade, frankly unnecessary. The pedals are supplied Keo Classic, light and reliable enough, we have the carbon Look Keo, offering a significant savings in weight and greater rigidity. The functionality of both is excellent. The water-bottle cage is carbon, while the saddle is the SLK of Selle Italia. So assembled, complete with pedals, and bottle (empty), the bike weighs 7.9 kg, as shown by our instrumentation.

The road test

We tried long and deeply this bike on roads that have gone from high road to really disjointed, with a small bet on the white road. Just riding assumes a normal position and the feeling of confidence is remarkable. After walking seems to have been a lifetime. Keo pedals have a good hook and a great base of support. At the maximum voltage coupling really consistent, but for beginners or for turist cyclists council to regulate the strength of coupling to a minimum: it is easier and quicker release the shoe and pedal anchor remains safe. The handlebar grip is natural and comfortable, but those with smaller hands (say the measure down M) will have some difficulty in forging good handlebars. For the latter, I would recommend taking a regular turn round. The grip is low suitable for all and ergonomic curve ensures an ideal. The tape series integrates well with the width of the bicycle, and ensures a safe and comfortable, even if we would have preferred a more rugged fur to the touch, so as to ensure an even more secure (especially thinking of the summer periods where sweating is greater). Even commands Campagnolo Chorus present an excellent ergonomics, with the possibility of scaling or increase more marches in a single motion. This option is very useful when dealing reaching a rapid ascent from a descent (and vice versa), and in general all those occasions when there is a remarkable and rapid change in altitude or pace of race. Again those who have big hands will find great advantage: with small hands, in fact, often are unable to exploit its full potential of the system, since the trip lever, reduced to a single gear change, it becomes remarkable when you want to change more than two reports with a single movement. The saddle Selle Italia SLK presents, at first sight, an unexpected comfort. On the move shows the great comfort of this bicycle. Technicians Viner have no doubt centered the goal of obtaining a bike comfortable over long distances and the disconnected. The frame can filter so remarkable all the roughness asphalt and this is also for the fork. The monocoque seat helps further the work of the frame, and at the saddle and back arrive very few repercussions, very mitigated and  padded. More rigid, however, the behavior of the attack and the bends. Do you feel that these components are more rigid and less filter blows: a pity, because the fork, however, works very well. It is hard but can absorb the disconnections good soil. At this valuable behavior on disconnected contribute, without doubt, the shares of cycling frame, really guessed. Stability is, in fact, exemplary and even at high speed the sense of security and control is always present. In the long descents technical bike runs fast and secure trajectories with surgical precision. Above all, then, where the asphalt is ruined, the supremacy of this frame emerges. You can go fast with maximum safety, with inputs cornering not fulminant but gradual and safe. Once the bike path follows safely, even if on disconnected without abnormal behaviour, almost as go on a track, so you can soon sow all, with confidence and ease. The sensitivity to lateral wind is never excessive and with a little effort you can keep the right trajectory. With this framework it is easy to stay in the saddle for hours with a comfort unknown to the competitors (all, then, without resorting to frame solutions extravagant). Lots of convenience must not think of a frame "outermost": responsiveness is excellent, but always balanced and gradual. The bike, reviving action on the pedals, it is always very little breaks, but is a long way anyway. It has, in short, that nervous behavior of other bike and this could mislead. It seems, in short, just reactive, but it is only a sensation due excellent stability and directionality of the chassis: a value and not a defect. Compared to the chassis reputation for being super hard, if there are these differences should be minimal and really not evaluable in common. Furthermore, if a frame is not "even" drive would not have been used by the team Miche. By contrast, the apparent comfort, especially after many hours in the saddle, when compared with other bicycles was still perfectly relaxed. In uphill the bike runs fast and is easy to go a long way standing on the pedals. On climbs appear even the behaviour of Fulcrum Racing 1, really light and sliding. In these conditions is easy to get up on the pedals with a ergonomics of the command almost perfect: it is easy to move from one relationship to a great little more difficult to make the step reverse, because the lever of command is somewhat most backward. In plain, with the classic belly on the ground, namely with their hands on the low hold, the bike is fast and ergonomics command is perfect to increase that to climb the marches. The lightness of the bike, already appreciated in height, is reflected positively even in these circumstances, where it is easy to reach high speeds or raise the rhythm in out of saddle. On undulating ground then it is a pleasure to get up in the saddle to overcome an off without scaling relationship. In this, in addition to the lightness and responsiveness of the frame, also contribute much wheels. The Fulcrum Racing 1 showed during the test all their goodness. Safe and reliable, show good glide and weight really helps content changes in rhythm and uphill, where their response is always excellent. In nearly 1,000 km, most of them on roads not in good condition, no problems whatsoever, maintaining his excellent centering in the right voltage rays as well, do not suffer much wind side. The sides corrected also help the work of improving the modulated brakes. A pair of good wheels. The Schwalbe Stelvio 700x23 tyres inflated to the maximum allowed (10 bar) showed a fluency: by running on secure, while the slick profile practically requires some attention on wet. In this case it is advisable to reduce the pressure 6 bar, in order to find the maximum confidence and security at the expense of a wire rolling. They are very good tyres, suitable for everyday use and intensively to 360 degrees. The Skeleton Campagnolo brakes play their excellent work: strong and resistant to fatigue. The front brake is great for power and modulability; the rear needs to be more juice for power decelated. This is a behavior from the same Campagnolo wanted to avoid jamming the rear side. The neophyte will find ample benefits from this system but, perhaps, most experts would have preferred a more responsive command. By contrast, in wet conditions all appreciate this modular back. Even in the long descent, overwhelmingly repeatedly called into question, have never betrayed expectations, providing safe and modular deceleration. Even in the wet their behavior is always excellent result. The exchange and derailleur are fault-tolerant. Several times have never abused wrong, even in the most disparate crossings or changing one or more marches with the chain strong shot. The controls are fluid and changing ratio of a need for excessive effort. The transition from one to another relationship is fluid, fast and silent. Only with the latest reports, changing without alleviate the coup pedal, it appears more noise and less fluidity of change, but it is a behavior that is the limit (and perhaps beyond) of the exchange. The derailleur has the same qualities and useful exchange rate is the ability to move in three intermediate positions, before changing statment, in order to prevent crossings maximum chain smears against the derailleur. The crank Ultra-Torque has put on display all his skills rigidity and its compact, which allows the shoes to run close to the frame, in a prime position from the viewpoint of biomechanics of the pedal. Finally, the seat SLK has proved the ideal choice for this bike: even after many hours comfort remains high and no pain on intimate parts, primarily perineum.

Conclusions

Viner Mitus has put on display obvious gifts of comfort, especially over long distances, and handling unexpected. The responsiveness is excellent, but not showy, on the contrary seems little reactive and only comparing it with other products we realize that it is also very responsive to the level of the best racing frames. The fork works well and contributes significantly to the driving skills of the bike, and only in extreme situations show the side by some critics. The rear derailleur and the front derailleur are excellent, as are the rims and tyres. It should be allowed to adopt sterm and handlebars carbon monocoque to further improve comfort.

Positive aspects:
Quality construction

Well-finished
Comfort running
Value for money
Ability to customize
Driving
Stability
Security
Braking

Negative aspects:
Sterm and handlebar not carbon monocoque (and for the production also the seat post)
Fulcrum Racing 1 non-series

Is suitable for

Athlete: the bike is ideal for long trips, especially with conditions of asphalt not perfect. Some doubt emerge to be adopted by a pure sprinter.

GF-tourist cyclist: the exaltation of this bicycle, practically perfect
New user: the feeling of security, the behavior always sincere and secure, the bike for a neophyte.

Women: four sizes dedicated to women, the ability to customize components make it a good bike for the "gentle sex."

Recommendations for the purchase

The frame and the group series are excellent; to further improve the comfort you could add seat, and fold attack carbon monocoque, then the wheels Fulcrum Racing 1 and finally pedals Look Keo Carbon.

Prices

The kit chassis, consisting in frame, fork and headset, costs in Italy 1.995 Euros, a competitive price against competitors, primarily because of its quality of construction and its dynamic qualities. The bike has a full range of prices ranging from Euro 3,295 of Campagnolo Centaur to 5,252 Euro of Team Miche Replication, and even in this case the prices seem to have a certain competitive advantage against competitors (perhaps with products made in Southeast Asian), the value for money is more than good and the excellent ability to customize.
