CompetitionsUCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships – Day 2
After a strong first day at the Para-Cycling Track World Championships on Friday which saw Brits win seven medals, the GB Para-Cycling Team bagged six more medals on the second day of the competition on Saturday, with a number of brilliant performances by its experienced riders and new talent alike. The first of those came in the Men’s C3 Kilo when Darren Kenny produced a winning ride of 1:11.293 and Rik Waddon followed closely behind with 1:11.733. Young Shaun McKeown rode the Kilo in just 1:13.0860, his PB, but his hopes of meeting Kenny and Waddon on the podium once more were dashed when Spain’s Amador Granados took a second off McKeown’s time, placing him fourth in the race. The Men’s C4 Kilo proved a nerve racking experience for Jody Cundy after his British team mate Tel Byrne posted a superb time of 1:07.694 early on in the competition. Only Cundy had ever gone quicker! With 20 riders to go and tired legs from the previous day’s 4km Pursuit, the World and Paralympic Champion found himself under pressure to pull something special out of the bag. And he did just that with his quickest ever Kilo ride of 1:05.144 which broke the WR (his own) and got spectators and staff in the British pen on their feet. The Men’s C5 Kilo brought yet more drama to the competition when Jon-Allan Butterworth set a new WR with 1:07.615 on his first ever ride in the event at worlds level. Overwhelmed by the effort and the scale of his achievement, Butterworth needed help off his bike and back into the GB pen. With 23 riders yet to compete, the next hour proved an ordeal for Butterworth but no other competitor came close, not even Mark Bristow, Paralympic Champion and holder of the previous WR smashed earlier by the young Brit. Sarah Storey delivered for Britain by breezing through the quarter finals of the Women’s C5 Pursuit and catching her USA opponent Greta Neimanas in a gold ride off in the final. Anthony Kappes and Barney Storey’s venture into the 4km Tandem Pursuit proved a little more challenging and the field highly competitive. The pairing produced a strong ride of 4:28.064, their PB, and qualified 7th, just one second too slow to make it into the finals.
