Cardoso, first Footon-Servetto-Fuji abandon in Tour de France

Manuel Cardoso became the first withdrawal of FOOTON-SERVETTO-FUJI in the 97th Tour de France, starting yesterday with a prologue in the streets of Rotterdam. Despite his unstoppable will to continue the race, the Portuguese sprinter went forced to give up the race after confirmation that his brutal crash yesterday, four kilometers from the finish line, was hiding two fractures in his jawbone and right side blade in his shoulder, that make his presence in the French tour unadvisable. Cardoso is still in a medical center in Rotterdam at this moment and will not be able to take the start in the first road stage of the race, starting on Dutch soil to Brussels in just few minutes. The abandon by Cardoso marks a big loss for FOOTON-SERVETTO-FUJI in the numerous mass sprints across the first week of competition, while the Lusitan sums up yet another strike of misfortune in a 2010 season, where, in spite of getting a prestigious win in UCI ProTour’s opener Tour Down Under, a crash in the Volta ao Algarve already kept him out of competition for several weeks.
