Mathias Frank On The Road To Recovery

Knocked out of his Tour de France by a violent crash in the prologue, Mathias Frank is determined to return to competition for the BMC Racing Team later this season.

Underwent surgery

Frank said his crash into metal barriers on rainy streets in Rotterdam was the worse of his career. It broke his right thumb, tore a muscle in his left thigh and required three stitches in his lip. "It happened so fast and was so shocking, I don't remember most of it," Frank said. The Swiss underwent surgery last Friday to insert two pins in his thumb. He is expected to be off the bike three or four weeks while doing physical therapy. "My goal is to do some races in September or October," Frank said.

Had good form

Winner of the mountain and sprint classifications at the Tour de Suisse, Frank said he was looking forward to riding in support of Cadel Evans. "I was really feeling well, building a lot of confidence and looking forward to the Tour," Frank said. "To crash out in the prologue was really awful. Now I look forward to coming back and just taking it day-by-day. Next year is another Tour de France."
