Amaël Moinard earned the King of the Mountains jersey for the BMC Racing Team Wednesday at the Tour of the Basque Country while Alexander Kristoff sprinted to a top 10 finish in Scheldeprijs.

Looking For A Stage Win

Moinard was part of a three-man break that gained a 3:30 lead before being caught in the last 15 kilometers of the 180 km stage. "I wanted to try to win a stage, so I attacked on the first KOM to escape on the downhill," Moinard said. "With the jersey, I have motivation to be on the front and look for a stage win, not just focus on the jersey." Alexander Vinokourov (Astana) soloed to the stage win and Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) is the new leader. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said he will wait for Thursday's stage before deciding whether to defend Moinard's three-point KOM lead. "The KOM is usually won more in the breakaways, so we'll see how it goes," Verbrugghe said.

Kristoff Avoids Crash

In Belgium, Kristoff survived a wild dash at the end of the 200 km classic to finish seventh. Several riders went down as Mark Cavendish (HTC-Highroad) took the win. "I saw (Tyler) Farrar, who won here last year, so I tried to get on his wheel," Kristoff said. "The crash happened just as I started sprinting, so I had to brake a bit, but I managed to get around it. But I lost a lot of speed." BMC Racing Team's George Hincapie crashed twice, scraping his right hip and banging his left knee.
