Hyde Park signals one year to go countdown

Today marks the official one year to go until the London 2012 Olympic Games, with British Triathlon preparing for the free to view Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship London presented by Tata Steel taking place on 6 and 7 August 2011.

Hyde Park will host the iconic free to view event, with the men’s race on Sunday 7 August 2011 taking place exactly 365 days before the men’s Olympic Triathlon on Tuesday 7 August 2012, signifying the British Triathlon countdown to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The world’s best triathletes will all be in Hyde Park, with no less than five medallists from the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games lining up on the pontoon alongside a wealth of world class British triathletes including three former world champions Alistair Brownlee, Helen Jenkins and Tim Don. British Triathlon alongside many other National Federations has included the event as a selection race for the London 2012 Olympic Games, ensuring the action will deliver a memorable event for the British sporting public.

British Triathlon’s men’s coach Ben Bright, believes the next 12 months will be an exciting time for the sport commenting: “This is going to be the most exciting twelve months for everyone involved in triathlon, not just athletes but staff as well. The Olympics are hugely exciting, and having a home Olympics is quite simply a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"The British team is in a strong position on the men’s side in particular, but also on the women’s. However, we cannot afford to be complacent."

Hyde Park expects up to 25,000 spectators each day of racing, providing the perfect opportunity to test your favourite viewing spot in advance of next year’s event, as the triathlete’s race through some of London’s most iconic landmarks including the Serpentine, The Wellington Arch and Buckingham Palace.

For triathlon fans who can’t travel to Hyde Park, triathlon big screens are being created in Manchester, Birmingham, Derby, Portsmouth, Plymouth and Cardiff which will bring our fast growing, modern and dynamic Olympic sport to the heart of our British cities. Each event will show the Hyde Park events on Saturday and Sunday with triathlon come and try events for sporting fans looking to take up the triathlon challenge.
