Cycling Pro Road & MtbCervelo Team race preview
With the Tour de France 2010, now in the history books, the cycling season continues this week with the Clasica San Sebastian followed by the Tour de Pologne for the men as the women head to Sweden for the next leg of the World Cup program. Men’s Team On July 31 Cervélo TestTeam will tackle the challenge of the Clasica Ciclista San Sebastian, a one-day classic on the UCI ProTour calendar. The race, in existence since 1981, is taking a quantum leap forward this year with a considerably more difficult final. In general the race route, over a 234 km course covers many difficult roads through the Basque hills. Early climbs will inspire breakaways, but the decisive attacks usually occur on the slopes of the Alto de Jaizkibel climb. This will include two difficult sections where teams will be forced to select and then try to get their best riders in the front group to fight for victory in the hectic run-in to San Sebastian. The team is also participating at the 67th Tour de Pologne. The route of the 2010 edition will offer stages for the sprinters and will also include some tough climbs. The race starts with a stage from Sochaczew to Warsaw before heading to Katowice. Stage four finishes with a climb to Rownica, considered the hardest climb in Poland. The race will finish in Krakow for the third year in a row on August 7. The Cervélo TestTeam will be at the start with an international roster of good sprinters and climbers. Women’s Team Next up on the women’s race schedule is the World Cup in Sweden. On July 30, Cervélo TestTeam will defend their Team Time Trial victory from the 2009 World Cup Open du Suède, in Vargarda. Half of last year’s victorious team - Regina Bruins (NED), Sarah Düster (GER) and Kirsten Wild (NED) will be racing again in 2010 and will be joined by their strong time trial teammates Charlotte Becker (GER), Emma Pooley (GBR) and Iris Slappendel (NED). Two day’s later on August 1 the eighth World Cup race of the season follows with a 132 km road race in the beautiful Vargarda region. Kirstin Wild (NED) has good memories of the race that she finished second in last year. The focus for the team is to win as many World Cup points as possible for the overall ranking where they are currently second.
