Mauro Santambrogio finished eighth for the BMC Racing Team Tuesday at the Italian one-day semi-classic Tre Valli Varesine, avoiding a number of crashes that caught up several teammates – including former world champion Alessandro Ballan.

Ballan not seriously hurt

Ballan slightly injured his wrist in his crash, but returned to the peloton with the help of Florian Stalder. Karsten Kroon and Martin Kohler also crashed in the 199-kilometer race that finished with seven laps of a tough circuit in Varese. "Mauro did a good at the end because each lap had a really hard 2.5 km climb to the finish," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director René Savary said. Daniel Martin (Garmin-Transitions) soloed to win.
