Eibegger comes short for victory in Heers

Austrian rider Markus Eibegger (FOOTON-SERVETTO-FUJI) has been just few meters short to take his only attack of the day to the finish in the sixth stage of the 6th Eneco Tour (UCI ProTour), the last road race in the Benelux stagerace over 206 kilometers from Bilzen to Heers. After a very moving finale, which saw the dangerous attempt by Devolder (QST), Sicard (EUS), Aerts (OLO) and Machado (RSH) being caught just eight kilometers from the line, attacks for the victory came everywhere from the bunch as the peloton almost let the mass arrival go undisputed.

The ex-national champion from the Gold Generation -which saw today Enrique Mata giving up today before his participation in the Vuelta a España- took his move in the ending two kilometers, initially in a solo action and then accompanied by Polish rider Maciej Paterski (LIQ), who was pulled in by Eibegger with no collaboration to take the peloton into danger until the last 300 meters, where he was caught by a charging peloton led by stage winner André Greipel (THR). Beside Eibegger, Gold rider David Gutiérrez Palacios was also making part of the group, but an infortunate puncture with five kilometers from the finish avoided him reaching the finish with the leaders. Martin (THR) will have to defend his 11-second gap to Moerenhout (RAB) in the decisive 17-km individual time trial in and around Genk on Tuesday.
