Rodríguez back in Vuelta top

The 65th Vuelta a España turned upside down as Spaniard Joaquím Rodríguez (KAT) regained the overall lead after the 16th stage, a hard 181km trek with four demanding ascents in the way from Gijón to Cotobello, the third consecutive mountain-top finish on Northern soil. Rodríguez took advantage of race leader Nibali (LIQ) fading in the ending 700 meters to seize control as Mikel Nieve (EUS) crowned his breakaway from the start and reached the finish solo. The FOOTON-SERVETTO-FUJI team put Giampaolo Cheula on top of their performance on Monday, as Alberto Benítez was one of the main riders trying to make the escapes in a very moving start of the race, full of attacks that gave place to the definitive 11-man group. The race moves on to Valladolid, the place where the second rest day will take place before the crucial 46km time trial in and around Peñafiel on Wednesday.

Celis and Gutiérrez Palacios out of order after races in Canada

Basque rider Arkaitz Durán was the best placed competitor from FOOTON-SERVETTO-FUJI in the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal (UCI ProTour), the closing race of the Gold run through Canada over 194km in the hard circuit around the Mont-Royal and the Col de la Polytechnique. Durán, accompanied by Austrian Markus Eibegger, made it until the last lap into the 40-rider group from where Dutchman Robert Gesink (RAB) would take off for a hard charge to win solo from the last 10km. The squad directed by Stefano Zanini could only start with six riders in the Canadian race: the down by David Gutiérrez Palacios, whose further checks in a medical center in Québec later on Friday revealed a broken nose following his crash in the race, joined the sudden absence by fellow Cantabrian Vidal Celis, feeling bad with sore throat in the morning prior to the race. The Gold Generation will land in Paris tomorrow as the charter flight taking the participating teams from Montréal departs in the late evening today.
