World road champion Cadel Evans enjoyed his return to good form by sprinting to third for the BMC Racing Team Wednesday at the Grand Prix de Wallonie.

Cut off in final corner

Evans was the last of five riders to follow an attack on the final, twisting climb inside the last two kilometers. But when Riccardo Ricco and Paul Martens raced to be first through the last left-hand turn, Evans was third and couldn't make up ground. Martens (Rabobank) narrowly took the win. "I got a bit cut off trying to pass on the inside and had to brake a bit there," Evans said. "There was no chance to come back after that. It was a bit disappointing, because I had the legs to make another good acceleration for the finish. But looking toward the worlds, things are coming together well."

Concerted chase

When a group of four gained more than five minutes, Alexander Kristoff first contributed to the chase. A more concerned effort by the rest of the BMC Racing Team followed, which reeled in the break with 22 km to go. "The entire team made a really good effort today and we knew the last climb would be the most important one," BMC Racing Team Directeur John Lelangue said. "With his performance today, Cadel can be confident that he is in good shape for the world championships."
