Cycling Pro Road & MtbNational Track Championships open winter track season
The British National Track Championships will get under way on Tuesday 21 September and culminate on Saturday 25 September as Britain’s best cyclists battle it out at the Manchester Velodrome for the honour of becoming National Champion. The five day event will mark the start of the winter track season and is the first chance for spectators to watch the country’s elite cyclists before they compete in major international events such as the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and the UEC European Track Championships in Poland. With the cream of domestic and world talent involved, including four time Olympic Champion Sir Chris Hoy, current Olympic and World Champion Victoria Pendleton and Olympic Team Pursuit Champion Geraint Thomas, fans can expect some blockbuster track racing. Both Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton will be competing on Tuesday 21 September with racing kicking off at 7pm with the Women’s 500m TT and the Women’s Madison. Team Sky Track Cycling will be defending their title in the Open Team Sprint on the same night. Wednesday’s action (22 September) will begin at 6pm and see the Team Sky quartet of Geraint Thomas, Ben Swift, Ian Stannard and Pete Kennaugh taking part in the Men’s Scratch race while the likes of Jess Varnish and Becky James will race in the Women’s Team Sprint. Thursday 23 September will be a full day competition comprising of two racing sessions. Qualifying for the Men’s Points, Women’s Sprint and Women’s Pursuit will take place from 12 pm and the finals session will begin at 6pm and will see Victoria Pendleton defending her Sprint title for the ninth consecutive year. Paralympian Sarah Storey will also be defending her Pursuit title, having beaten Hannah Mayho in last year’s final. On Friday 24 September competition will start at 12pm and see star names take centre stage in qualification for the Men’s Individual Pursuit and Men’s Sprint races. The finals from both events will take place in the finals session from 7pm and the session also includes the Women’s Scratch race starring Junior World Omnium Champion Laura Trott. Saturday 25 September, the final day of the competition, will start at 2pm and see a host of Olympic, World, European and Junior Champions in action. Sir Chris Hoy will take on the likes of Jason Kenny, Matt Crampton and Ross Edgar in the Men’s Keirin while Victoria Pendleton will be looking to add to her impressive tally of National titles with victory in the Women’s Keirin. Talented juniors Owain Doull and Dan McLay will be competing in the Junior Madison later that day, Team Sky will be looking to capture the Open Team Pursuit title and Wendy Houvenaghel, Joanna Rowsell and Rebecca Romero will compete in opposing teams in the Women’s Team Pursuit.
