British National Track Championships – Roundup Day 3

Victoria Pendleton continued her supremacy in the sprint discipline on Day 3 as she claimed her ninth National Sprint title, seeing off stiff competition from young prodigies Becky James (Silver) and Jess Varnish (Bronze). Vicky will now take time out before she looks to reclaim the Women’s Keirin title on Saturday, in front of a sell out crowd at the Manchester Velodrome.

Pendleton wasn’t the only star to shine on Day 3 though as Olympic Silver medallist Wendy Houvenaghel won the Women’s individual pursuit beating Sarah Storey with a super quick time of 3:30.612, which was faster than her silver medal winning time at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She looked in good from the outset though and had earlier qualified fastest for the final with a time of 3.31.555.

The battle for the National Champions jersey in the Men's Points race went all the way to the line in the last event on Day 3, as 100% ME rider George Atkins took gold ahead of Simon Yates. In a scintillating show of young British talent, Yates had a two point lead going into the last lap but was unable to prevent the East Midlands rider from taking the win. Mark Christian took bronze.

In other action, four world records were broken in the Para cycling 200m TT. Jon Butterworth added to last nights win in the Para cycling 1km TT, with a stunning ride of 11.105 for Gold in the C5 class. Paralympic and World Champion Jody Cundy then broke his own previous World Record for the C4 discipline with a 10.970, gaining silver and capping a great night for British paracycling.

Also on the record breaking trail in the non-championship Women and Men’s tandem dicipline, were the pairings of Sophie Thornhill and Helen Scott with a time of 11.608 and Anthony Kappes and Craig MacLean with a 10.290.
