Cannondale Athlete Mirinda Carfrae Wins World Ironman Championship

Cannondale athlete Mirinda Carfrae captured her first Ford Ironman World Triathlon Championship win this past Saturday in Kona, HI. Coming off of a strong 2010 race season, Carfrae dominated the field of 1,800 world-class athletes with an overall time of 8:58:36. Carfrae rode the newly designed Cannondale Women’s Slice for the first time in an Ironman distance race.

"Words can’t describe what winning Kona means to me, it is a dream come true," said Mirinda Carfrae. "Everything came together so well. I had the swim of my life and then hopped on my bike. It was probably one of my best bike rides. I am so happy with how the bike performed and running off the bike felt how it always does off of a Cannondale, awesome. I was able to settle into a nice rhythm and carry that all the way to the finish."

Coming to the starting line Saturday, Carfrae had already proven herself to be a top contender at Kona. In 2010 alone, she has landed on the podium seven times including four remarkable first place finishes at the Ironman distance, winning the Rohto Ironman 70.3 California, Ironman 70.3 Muskoka, Ironman 70.3 Calgary, and Ironman 70.3 Vineman, riding each race to victory on her Cannondale Slice.

"We are proud to support Mirinda and could not be happier for her as she celebrates her first win at the Ironman World Triathlon Championship. At Cannondale, in collaboration with our team athletes, we develop products which push the boundaries of technology and performance," said Bob Burbank, Global General Manager of Cannondale. "Mirinda has been intimately involved with the development and testing of our bikes and provides incredible feedback which allows Cannondale to continue the quest for the perfect ride."

On the men's side, Cannondale’s Miki Weiss also raced his Slice to the top, finishing in 13th place overall. His bike split was the second fastest of time of the day, clocking in at a blazing 4:25:21.

Kona Ironman course record holder Chrissie Wellington dominates the field on the Cannondale Slice. Available in 3 models, the Slice is an industry leader in aerodynamics and allows the cyclists to achieve maximum speeds. With an unmatched stiffness-to-weight ratio, the industry’s lightest aero frame and a two-position aero seatpost, the Slice descends as well as it climbs. Slice frames use SAVE tube shaping absorbs road vibration, making it the perfect companion for any triathlete, keeping legs fresh and ready for the run ahead. The Cannondale Slice is the choice bike for the world’s top Ironman competitors.
