Michael Olheiser named 2008 USA Cycling Elite Time Trial National Champion

Following the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s (USADA) disqualification of Jonathan Chodroff’s results, Michael Olheiser (Huntsville, Ala./Tri-Star Cycling Team) has been named the 2008 USA Cycling Elite Time Trial National Champion.

USA Cycling has contacted Olheiser to congratulate him on his title and will award him with the Stars-and-Stripes jersey to signify his national title. Olheiser, who also won the 2009 and 2010 national titles in the elite time trial, now has three national championships in a row under his belt.

Olhesier said that he’s looking forward to going for a fourth national title in his own neck of the woods next year as the USA Cycling Junior, U23 & Elite Road National Championships head down to August, Ga. in 2011.

The updated top-five results for the 2008 USA Cycling Elite Time Trial National Championships are as follows:

1. Michael Olheiser (Huntsville, Ala.)

2. Andy Jacques-Maynes (Corralitos, Calif.)

3. Colby Pearce (Boulder, Colo.)

4. Mark Santurbane (San Luis Obispo, Calif.)

5. Ian Stanford (Winona, Minn.)

USADA announced on Tuesday that Jonathan Chodroff has accepted a two-year period of ineligibility for an anti-doping rule violation based on his use and possession of synthetic erythropoietin (EPO) in 2007.

EPO, a synthetic hormone used to stimulate the body’s production of red blood cells, thereby increasing oxygen transport and aerobic power, is a prohibited substance in the class of Peptide Hormones, Growth Factors and Related Substances under the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic Movement Testing and International Cycling Union (UCI), both of which have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code (“Code”) and the world Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List.

Chodroff’s two-year period of ineligibility began on September 10, 2010, the day he accepted the sanction. Additionally, Chodroff is disqualified from all competitive results achieved on and subsequent to March 26, 2007, the date he first committed the anti-doping rule violations based on evidence currently in USADA’s possession, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.

In an effort to aid athletes, as well as all support team members such as parents and coaches, in understanding the rules applicable to them, USADA provides comprehensive instruction on its website on the testing process and prohibited substances, how to obtain permission to use a necessary medication, and the risks and dangers of taking supplements as well as performance-enhancing and recreational drugs. In addition, the agency manages a drug reference hotline, Drug Reference Online (www.GlobalDRO.com), conducts educational sessions with National Governing Bodies and their athletes, and proactively distributes a multitude of educational materials, such as the Prohibited List, easy-reference wallet cards, periodic newsletters, and protocol and policy reference documentation.

USADA is responsible for the testing and results management process for athletes in the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement, and is equally dedicated to preserving the integrity of sport through research initiatives and educational programs.
