Cycling Pro Road & MtbJuanjo Cobo: “To keep working”
Three days after Paris-Nice, where he helped his leaders Alejandro Valverde and Luis León Sánchez in getting an excellent result in the final classification with a second and a third place on the podium in Nice, Juanjo Cobo speaks about those eight days during which he worked hard to help the two Caisse d’Epargne champions from Murcia. You started Paris-Nice in good shape. How did you finish the race? “It is true that I was feeling well when I was training home but in the race I my level was not as good as I expected. My job was to help Alejandro and Luis León in the mountain stages and even if I achieved a good work, I wish my level was something higher.” Your team worked really a lot and we saw it fighting every day in the lead. Is it a deception no to have been able to win at least one stage? “Our goal was to try and win the general classification and from that point of view I believe we must be happy with our final result. A stage win was not the main objective but of course because we were so close almost every day I believe we deserve to win a stage. It is a pity but to finish with two riders on the podium is big satisfaction and I think that this something great and a reward for our job.” What do you think about the level of the bunch in that race? “The level was really high but this is one of the most important races of the beginning of the season and the level uses to be rather high in Paris-Nice. This year the speed was incredibly high in all the stages and even higher in the last two stages. It was impossible to take it easier not even during one kilometer. The season begins each time earlier out of Europe and as a consequence some riders have already a very high level when the races start on the old continent.” What have you to keep improving before the next races? “I have to keep on training the same way I did it before Paris-Nice but with more intensity. I will take advantage of the next days I will spend at home and also of the very good weather to put a lot of quality in my training sessions. I want to be in good shape in the next races which form part of my calendar: International Criterium, Grand Prix Indurain and Tour of the Basque Country.”
