NewsAwesome start of team SCOTT-Swisspower at the SRAM XX Maremma Cup in Tuscany
Double victory of Florian Vogel and Nino Schurter in the elite class, 1st and 3rd place by Andri Frischknecht and Dominic Zumstein in the junior class. Hors category The third edition of the SRAM XX Maremma Cup went big! 140 riders of over 15 nations competed in the elite field at the season opener, which was held as a “hors category” event. The big teams such as Merida (Hermida, Näf, Käss, Dahle), Canondale (Fontana, Fumic, Gujan), Topeak Ergon (Lakata, Kurschat, Kalentjeva), BMC (Milatz, Gallati), Trek (Mantecon) and two Scott Teams (CCC with the women’s world champion Maya Wloszczowska and Swisspower) to name the big ones, choose the south of Tuscany to get the 2011 season started. First start, first win Our juniors started top motivated. Not only was it their first MTB race as a junior, both Dominic and Andri put a lot of work into building the race track few years ago. After several laps over the years they finally got to race themselves. And they did it in style. After a slow start sitting in 9th and 12th place after lap 1 the constantly moved up to the podium spots. Knowing the very technical course in and out sure helped. Frischi junior even made it all the way to the front winning his first race right away. Dominic ended up in great 3rd place. Double victory SCOTT-Swisspower was even more dominant in the elite race. Especially Florian Vogel. He piloted his SCOTT Scale 29er to a clean start to finish solo winning over his teammate Nino Schurter. The team tactics played perfectly. While Flo was on his own right away, Nino focused on staying on Italian champion Marco Aurelio Fontana’s wheel, controlling the chase. Two laps to go he got away from the Italian stallion to secure his second place. German champion Moritz Milatz followed in 4th, world champion Jose Antonio Hermida in 5th. World champion 2009 Irina Kalentjeva (Topeak) won the women’s race ahead of Cecile Ravanell (GT) and world champion 2010 Maya Wloszczowska. Olympic champion Gun Rita Dahle was in 5th. Short Track by night The Kermesse on the “piazza” down town historic Massa Marittima was a great success. Not for the Scott riders (they did not make it into the final), but the event itself was something the mountain bike world has not seen yet.
