Shimano has introduced its first group for the e-bike: STEPS (Shimano Total Electric Power System). The new group has been conceived and designed specifically for electric bikes. The STEPS features a new ergonomic controls designed specifically for e-bikes. The electric motor is placed on the front wheel and has an output of 250 watts, enough to push the bike at 25 km/h. The engine recharges the battery when not in use and descents, where he also acts as a brake. New change to 8 reports, internal rear hub and is led by a new electronic control system on the handlebar. The brakes can be either disc or v-brake. The STEPS group is compatible, however, with components of the NEXUS group, designed for city bikes, and can also work with traditional hubs and derailleur. The new battery introduces a system called E-Gain which is the ability to recharge the battery itself in various ways: downhill, when the motor operates as a brake and simultaneously recharges the battery; as soon as the brakes are applied when the motor stops absorb energy and begin to recharge the battery; with fast charge system, which allows you to recharge the battery in an hour. The battery can be recharged directly on the bike, or be easily removed. The battery can be recharged up to 3000 times and that means a life of over eight years, with a recharge day. The battery is lithium ion battery and has a power 24V/4.0Ah. The new commands allow you to have full control of the gearbox and electric motor, being able to see the gear lever and the state of battery charge. The group STEPS, then, can communicate with an instrument that will be included as dealers, which will allow an accurate diagnosis of the group and display data on your computer. All componti soto waterproof and have been tested at temperatures from -20 to +60 degrees Celsius. The new group will be officially presented at Eurobike 2010 and on sale in December 2010.
